Stone Salad

Stone Salad: A Family Sunday 2021

This is RYSEC’s 7th annual Stone Salad celebration!  You’ve heard of the story of Stone Soup?  If not, you’ll hear it this week. Our modernized version is called Stone Salad.

We’ll celebrate generosity together through a family-friendly potluck and festival, using appropriate cautions for social distancing and hygiene because we’re still in pandemic times.  We will have a very brief program, reading the Stone Soup story, then proceed to our meal.  We will eat outdoors, weather permitting.

If you are not willing or able to attend in person, we will try to post a video online at about 11:30 am New York time, so that you can hear and see our Stone Salad story around the same time as those who are present in person.  Facebook: LINK

Register to attend in person. We will follow New York City in-person restaurant guidelines, which includes wearing masks when we’re moving around, and removing them to eat, while social distancing.  Hand sanitizer will be available. Proof of vaccination is required for 12 years and older.

Bring some food to share. Instead of adding to a shared bowl this year, bring something that is ready-to-eat and in a serving dish requiring no further preparation.  See below for some suggestions about what to bring.  We could use some volunteers to arrive about 10:30 to help set up the room.

11 a.m. is gathering time, to meet and greet one another and put the food on the table.  We start the brief, semi-formal program at 11:15.  This Sunday, we’ll have a shared meal together, and end by 1 p.m.

There will be no Zoom room this week, though we will livestream the book reading.

What to Bring?

Below are the items we suggest that you bring, based on the first letter of your last name. If there are two last names in your family, pick the first one.

  • A-G – a salad (preferably without meat or nuts) to serve 6-8 people; non-perishable food items to donate
  • H-L  – a side dish or bread (preferably without meat or nuts) to serve 6-8 people; non-perishable food items to donate
  • M-R – beverages for 6-8 people; non-perishable food items to donate
  • S-Z – dessert for 6-8 people; non-perishable food items to donate

*Also, please bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items to “donate” during our Stone Salad story.  Volunteers will bring those to one of the local sites distributing foods.

What to Do When You Arrive?

Salads, side dishes, bread, drinks and dessert can be put on the serving tables when you arrive.

Attending in Person

Registration for in-person attendance is open from the previous Sunday. Registration closes at 5 pm Saturday for Ethics for Children participation to be sure we're adequately staffed, and at 9 am on Sunday for adults attending the Platform Meeting.

Proof of vaccination (at least first dose) is required if attendee is 12 or older. Also required: mask while indoors, sanitize hands, respect social distance.
