Balance and the Human Spirit

During this year so far, we’ve talked about such topics as courage, hope, intention, and persistence.  All of those are essential to living a “good life” — but so is balance.  Balance of work and home, balance of self and others, balance of heart and mind, balance of activity and rest, balance of joy and sorrow, balance of justice and mercy, even the balance of breathing in and breathing out. Our Society Leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, will describe how and why we might seek more balance in our lives.

Equanimity doesn’t mean keeping things even; it is the capacity to return to balance in the midst of an alert, responsive life. I don’t want to be constantly calm. The cultural context I grew up in and the relational life I live in both call for passionate, engaged response. I laugh and I cry and I’m glad that I do. What I value is the capacity to be balanced between times.

– Sylvia Boorstein, from Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There

Jone Lewis has been an Ethical Culture Leader for 26 years and shares the Society’s interests in both social justice and personal and interpersonal transformation.

March theme: Balance.  What does it mean to be a person of balance?  What does it mean to be a community of balance?

11 a.m. is gathering time, to meet and greet one another.  We start the formal program at 11:15 and usually end about 12:30.  After that, we have a time of informal conversation with some beverages and snacks.  Please feel free to bring some snacks to share!
