Naureen Akhter, Deputy District Director for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and founding member of Muslims for Progress, will speak on her journey to activism following the 2016 presidential election. She will share her motivations and values that drive her work, and the issues that matter to her.  

About the Speaker: Naureen Akhter is Deputy District Director for Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez working to establish our presence in the community and serve the constituents of NY-14. As a Bangladeshi, Muslim American, Naureen saw the need to build power for our communities in light of the election of Donald Trump and the passage of the Muslim Ban. Along with several community members, she formed Muslims for Progress, working to increase civic engagement in the Muslim American community across Queens and Nassau counties. Naureen completed a fellowship with the Interfaith Center of New York’s Civic Leadership Academy and served as Recording Secretary for Community Education Council 28. She is a wife and mother to two public school children. In her previous life she was a food blogger (@Kitchen3N) where she shared recipes related to baking, cake decorating, and Bangladeshi cuisine. She has a BA in Physics from Barnard College, Columbia University.

Our Ethics Matters theme for March is Journey: the practice of walking a path; courageous growth and patient change

11 a.m. is gathering time, to meet and greet one another.  We start the formal program at 11:15 and usually end about 12:30.  After that, we have a time of informal conversation with some beverages and snacks.  Please feel free to bring some snacks to share!  

Ethics for Children meets concurrently with our Sunday programs. Please join us!
